The University of Hong Kong: improving Chinese language skills for KG students in NCS families

Using the Home-School-Community Model to Enhance the Chinese Language Proficiency of Non-Chinese Speaking Children

This research follows the The “C-for-Chinese@JC” project funded by the HK Jockey Club.

The study validates the effectiveness of using the Home-School-Community (H-S-C) framework in teaching Chinese to non-Chinese-speaking (NCS) children. Results revealed that NCS students receiving the H-S-C-based interventions showed a better Chinese language proficiency progression than the comparison group.

Interesting that the whole focus is on trying to achieve success through the creation of a L1 type learning environment - rather than the exploration of L2 teaching strategies.
